  • The Green Valley Squares are hosting an “introduction to square dance” party on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. at Canoa Hills Center. If you are a Green Valley Recreation member and think square dancing might be fun, have heard its “the thinking man’s dance,” or that it’s great exercise and exhilarating at the same time,” you can find out for yourself. Nationally-known caller, Rick Gittelman, is an expert at introducing people to the modern square dance. After a couple of demonstrations, he’ll get you all up and dancing in no time. There will be ice cream, cookies, and other goodies! You can dress in normal street clothing, but members will be dressed in traditional -- or in some cases more modern -- square dance attire, so you can see what to expect if you decide to join. Leather soles on your shoes are best, but any sole that is not extremely sticky will do.

This is also the ideal time to sign up for square dance lessons. They begin Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. at Canoa Hills, and are scheduled every Monday and Wednesday. Sign up forms will be at the party. Lessons are two hours long. Square dance attire is not worn for the lessons.

If you can’t make it to the party, you can enroll with GVR for beginner lessons. For information, visit gvsquares.info, or call President Gary Hill at 393-0266.
