Campers find skull on Halloween

Campers made a grisly discovery Halloween night when they came across a human skull in the desert southwest of Green Valley.

The group was camping and hunting in a remote area about three miles south of Canoa Road and 10 miles west of the Interstate 19 frontage road. They came across a “bleached white” human skull about 6 p.m., according to Pima County Sheriff’s reports.

No other bones were found. Deputies said they think the skull had been out there for some time and most likely belonged to an illegal immigrant.

Because of the rough terrain requiring a four-wheel-drive vehicle, a search and rescue team had to return the next day in the daylight to locate the skull.

Since October 2008, the Border Patrol has found more than 207 bodies of suspected illegal immigrants in the Tucson Sector, which includes most of the Arizona border with Mexico.
