Santa Cruz golfers take on humidity at Haven

It was Friday, Aug. 3—a day that found the Santa Cruz River and the humidity running high—when 40 hearty souls braved this humidity and the heat to compete in the monthly Santa Cruz Seniors event—a two-best-ball event at the Haven Golf Course.

Winning by the narrowest of margins was the foursome of Mike Kilby, Jim Shade, Steve Zientko and Larry Watson with a 122, edging Dick McGinty, Bill Farnsworth, Steve Jenkins and Bill Bos by one stroke.

Three strokes back with a 126 came Dick Purdy, Andy Sorenson, Chuck Miller and Mike Tannenbaum. Art Schott, Max McCartney, Bob Jorgensen and Hayward Sumner won fourth place with a 129, nosing out Jim Hudson, Jack Lewis, Bob Bowles and Ken Rudnick in a scorecard playoff.

The Sept. 7 tournament will be at Canoa Hills. The scoring will follow a one gross, two net ball format.

Senior golfers 55 and older interested in becoming a Santa Cruz Senior can contact tournament director Jim Hudson at 648-0645 or President Bill Rathburn at 648-1440.
